While during genealogy research in Virginia where generations of family members (Tylers, Mealy, Kincaides) lived since the 1800s, stories evolved: some were freed men and women, and some were slaves; and some owned land; some where white and some where black; and some fought in the wars. It is not autobiographical of the writer, although it does give an account of persons whom the writer has known and left writings of their life.
The novel, White Mink, took shape from a tale of two plantation owners fighting over a runaway slave, that evolved into the legacy of a family whose racial identities are blurred through generations. The book examines the strife just before the advent of the civil rights of the 1960s. It is a fictional account of persons struggle to enforce desegregation and those who fought to resist it.
