JW thought to himself, what would happen if two seven-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, were trained by ex-Navy SEALs and went on to have adventures as they grew older? What if they became Christians, then had their faith challenged so severely that they spent years getting over their anger with God? How would their friends and family help them? This is the idea behind Baby SEALs Part 1, the first book in the Baby SEALs series.

JW also wanted the gospel clearly presented in each book, and he didn't want the books to be too "churchy", with words a non-Christian wouldn't know. He also wanted to present resources that a reader could use to follow up on the questions raised and the answers given. He relies heavily on the Answers In Genesis website and materials, as well as Champ Thornton and The Radical Book for Kids, Frank Turek's Cross Examined blog site, the sermons of Chuck Swindoll and Robert Jeffress, and others too numerous to mention.

The writing has been influenced by Grace Livingston Hill who went to great lengths to weave the gospel into each of her books, as well as the novels of Frank Peretti, Janette Oke, and others.

JW was raised on a farm in the Texas Panhandle, along with his four siblings. Living eight miles outside a small town gave him a lot of time with his imagination. He wrote his first story when he was seven. JW resides in Texas with his wife, cocker spaniel, and horse.
