Darrell Duke - Author, Human Rights Advocate, Change-Maker, and Voice for the Voiceless
Darrell Duke is a social justice advocate, and seasoned front line worker in the fight against homelessness. He is a United States Army Veteran. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminology from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. His life's work centers on human rights, youth rehabilitation, and empowering marginalized communities impacted by systemic injustice.
His last book, A Haven for Hope [Helping People Experiencing Homelessness] draws from over a decade of direct service to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The book gained statewide recognition in California and led to a meeting with California Governor Gavin Newsom. The two were photographed discussing the book's insights and it's implications for State level homelessness policies during a Press Conference at Path of Life Ministries Community Shelter in Riverside, CA. The Governor's office website featured a story highlighting Darrell's work and lived experience.
The Governor was also photographed reviewing the book while engaging with the shelters leadership and homeless response teams.
Darrell once faced housing instability himself, but moved on to serve as Security Specialist for the very Shelter that now honors his work. His lived experience fuels his commitment and credibility and cements his place as a thought leader and advocate for sustainable, compassionate solutions.
Over the past 14 years Darrell has worked with youth held in State custody for juvenile crimes in Louisiana, individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Texas, and California.
His dedication extends to digital spaces as well--he's the creator of the web page Black Consciousness and Homelessness YouTube page A Haven for Hope, each of which addresses the intersection of race, justice, and equity.
