Daniel Kirkpatrick

I am a Research Fellow with the University of Kent, Conflict Analysis Research Centre. I completed a PhD with the University of Kent in 2017 and have published academic articles on topics including terrorism, conflict resolution/transformation, proscription and extremism in Terrorism & Political Violence, Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, and Critical Studies in Terrorism. My most recent work is a book on the freedom of expression in deeply divided societies published with Routledge. This draws on extensive interviews I conducted in Northern Ireland and South Africa, alongside archival research, and discourse analysis.

Overall, I write primarily for an academic audience, but I believe in having a policy relevant approach, challenging and improving upon conventional wisdom. My key passions centre on the freedom of expression and the cross section between it and counter-terrorism practices - the balance between liberty and security.

I also write for pleasure and enjoy delving into ancient Irish poetry, mythology and - of course - language. Besides writing I spend my time learning how 'not' to garden - though I have wonderful carrots this year which I'd like to add to my CV.
