Carol Forde-Johnston

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1988 and I have worked in the NHS for over 34 years. During my career I have worked in a variety of clinical roles, from staff nurse to hospital ward nursing sister, within the field of neurosciences. My interest in nurse education, clinical practice and research culminated in a Lecturer Practitioner role where I spent 22 years supporting adult pre-registration nursing students at Oxford Brookes University.

I am passionate about safe staffing for UK nurses and the support of Newly Registered Nurses during their transition period. My book 'How to Thrive as a Newly Qualified Nurse' aims to support 3rd years and Newly Registered Nurses who may feel overwhelmed following registration. This book provides a clear and practical guide to help structure learning during the first year as a Registered Nurse.

The areas of research that inspire me most are those linked to health service delivery and patient care experiences. I am currently a third year PhD in Nursing student and my research is examining how nurses' use of Electronic Patient Records affects nurse-patient interactions. Hopefully I'll be able to update this biography if I pass my doctorate!

Now that I’m coming to the latter part of my career, I’ve decided to create a series of free educational videos on ‘Nursing Interviews, Applications and Careers’ to support nurses on their career journey – check out my YouTube channel:
