He left Maine in 1968 after volunteering for the draft and served as an enlisted man in the US Army for two years before attending college at Memphis State University using the GI Bill. After graduation, David attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned in the Marine Corps. He is a Vietnam veteran and a retired Marine Corps helicopter pilot. David was a Presidential Aircraft Commander for President Ronald Reagan from 1984 until 1987. Before retiring from the Marine Corps, David commanded the Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron at Marine Corps Air Station, Tustin, California. After retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, David worked in several jobs, including as a contractor for Science Applications International Corporation at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One in Yuma, Arizona.
