He was born and raised in Texas, where a strong church-going family instilled in him the values of faith, integrity, and hard work. Those values have guided him throughout his life and are woven into every story he writes.

Some of his fondest childhood memories were made on his uncle's ranch near San Antonio, working alongside seven cousins baling hay, swimming in a round cattle trough, hunting rattlesnakes, and learning firsthand what ranch life was all about. His grandfather, Drury, taught him how to milk cows, catch chickens, fish, and appreciate the simple lessons that come from living close to the land. Later in life, Mike owned a Texas ranch of his own and spent years hunting, fishing, camping, and exploring the outdoors throughout the American West.

Those experiences inspired a lifelong fascination with the mountain men, pioneers, and ordinary men and women whose courage helped shape America.
