Stephen R. Barnard

Stephen R. Barnard is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminology at Butler University. His research and teaching focus on the role media and communication technologies play in relations of power, practice, and professionalism, and their implications for journalism and democracy. He is author of Citizens at the Gates: Twitter, Networked Publics, and the Transformation of American Journalism (2018, Palgrave Macmillan) and, with Andrew Lindner, All Media are Social: Sociological Perspectives on Mass Media (April 2020, Routledge). His work has appeared in New Media & Society, Journalism, Cultural Studies <=> Critical Methodologies, Hybrid Pedagogy, and in several edited volumes. He has also written for popular audiences in publications like The Hill, RealClearPolitics, and Contexts.
