Bob Kohn

Bob Kohn is a technology entrepreneur and copyright attorney. He is a former Visiting Scholar at Columbia Law School where he received his masters in law (LL.M degree) and performed academic research on the legal and ethical aspects of artificial intelligence.

Mr. Kohn is also the author of “Kohn On Music Licensing,” an 1,800-page treatise on the business and legal aspects of the music business, cited by the U.S. Supreme Court and widely considered the “bible” on legal issues in the music world. Kohn was the founder of EMusic.com, the pioneering music download service which started selling MP3 files for 99 cents in 1998, five years before the launch of iTunes. He is also a co-inventor of a patent for web-based royalty systems for record labels and music publishers.

In addition to writing, Mr. Kohn serves as an expert witness in copyright litigation. He has served both entertainment and technology industry clients, including Frank Sinatra, Jay-Z, Katy Perry, Bob Gaudio (The Four Seasons), Warner Music, Universal Music, Sony Music, BMG Rights Management, ASCAP, PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) software, Borland Software, Ashton-Tate, and others. He also served as Associated Editor of the Entertainment Law Reporter and taught law at Monterey College of Law. He has also lectured at NYU Law School, Fordham University, and Hunters College.

He is a fellow at the Center for the Study of the Great Ideas and serves on advisory boards of start-ups in which he makes personal investments. He lives in Manhattan.
