Ora E. Smith

Nelle and Ora Smith - this dynamic mother-daughter duo were true pioneers arriving on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina in 1963. Nelle helped start the first Sunday School at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Cub Scout troop, PTA, and the Library. Ora worked side by side with her mother at Nell's Harbour Shop eventually owning and managing a second shop, Nell's at Wexford.

Moving to Beaufort, South Carolina the Smith women exemplify modern Southern women. Ora founded "Beck and Call" providing errand services for busy people while Nelle co-stars in "Filmtastic Friday" YouTube videos for Lulu Burgess gift shop.

Nelle was born and raised in Winnsboro, South Carolina. Ora was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and lived her first two years in York, South Carolina. Both us attended Mary Baldwin College and the University of South Carolina in Columbia and graduated with degrees in Elementary Education.

We were thrilled to be interviewed about our book by Holly Bounds Jackson and featured on her series By the River. She is Director of Operations at ETV Lowcountry. Throughout her journalism career, Holly has earned multiple awards and honors. Three times she’s been awarded the Edward R. Murrow regional award for Excellence in Writing. Our interview air on SCETV Channel in January of 2019.
