The author of this book was born in the late 1940s to James and Dorothy Russell, residents of Watertown Massachusetts. When the author reached the age eligible for the draft, he made the decision to join the United States Air Force, where he served for eight years as a crew chief on F-4 Aircraft. In 1968, The author was assigned to a base in South Korea to assist in the recovery of the crew and the USS Pueblo, a ship that had been captured by North Korea. The crew was eventually released just before Christmas of 1968, but the USS Pueblo remains in North Korea and is currently the second oldest ship still commissioned in the Navy. The oldest ship still in commission is the USS Constitution, which is stationed in Boston, Massachusetts.
