James (Jim) Cardenas is married with two adult children and live in central Pennsylvania. Both parents were born in Medellin, Colombia. While growing up, his parents would take him to Colombia where his mother was one of fourteen children and his father was one of six. Needless to say, he has many, many cousins, most still in Colombia.
While growing up, admitting he was Colombian was difficult because most people only knew of Colombia for it’s reputation as the source for illegal drugs in the US. After many trips to Colombia, Jim began to understand that the drug problems in that country are primarily due to the demand for drugs in the United States, hence the name of the book, Killing Colombia. The main character, Jack Hunter, learns the true nature of the problems in Colombia when he questions the value of the mission he’s given in this story.
Many of the adventures in the Amazon jungle in this book are based on real events. Though most of Jim’s family lives in Medellin or Bogota, both large cities, Jim had a fun-loving uncle who talked his father into taking Jim and his brothers on an Amazon jungle adventure. To this day, it remains one of the greatest, most memorable trips of his life.
Jim’s jungle adventures are included in the book as seen through the eyes of the main characters. Those of you who read the book and have questions about any of it can reach out to him (Jcardenaskc@gmail.com). Thanks for reading.
