G. Deeya is a Nigerian-American poet, educator, and author. G. Deeya is Grace Ekwue's pen name.
"Dee ya" [deh-YAH] means "write it down" in Igbo (a Nigerian language).
Phonetically, G. Deeya sounds like "jide ya" [jee-DEH-yah], which means "hold onto it" in Igbo.
"I wanted to write down and preserve my spoken word pieces so that they can be held and carry on."
G. Deeya ventured into writing children's books in 2019. She carefully weaves wordplay and vivid imagery that shines through in her debut book, Hear Us: An Illustrated Poem. Her most recent book, More Than Extra: An Illustrated Moment, highlights a childhood memory of a Christmas play through the eyes of her sister.
When she's not writing, G. Deeya loves collaborating with her sister on their latest projects, featuring the Groundnuts Puppet Family.
