Bernadette, who also goes by the name Bess, had an irrepressible urge to devour books from a young age. By the age of six, she had already eaten three picture books and a secondhand book of fairy tales before she finally switched to reading. This significantly extended the lifespan of her library.
With such enthusiasm for the medium, it was only a matter of time before she began writing herself. Today, she tells stories about strong yet insecure characters who long for a sense of belonging, fight for those they love, or stand up to forces they’re not really a match for.
She refuses to be pigeonholed or confined to any one genre, instead writing whatever inspired her last Tuesday.
Most of her books fall into the romance, mystery, or fantasy genres and range from cozy and relaxing to dark and existential. No matter which end of the spectrum they fall on, the signature “Bess humor” is always present—there’s a dash of it in every novel, and so far, it’s added just the right amount of sparkle to them all.
