Victor McGlone graduated from Marshall University, and then continued his graduate studies at the University of Florida. He studied Spanish at the undergraduate and graduate levels, completing his doctorate in foreign language education. He has written on a variety of topics (language acquisition, teaching foreign languages, enrollment management, and general fiction). He has also taught Spanish at various levels (middle school, high school, and college levels).
His first novel, Bobby and Miguel, came out in the summer of 2019. It is the story of a twelve-year-old boy, Bobby, who gets new neighbors one summer. On the day his new neighbors move in, Bobby realizes they may not be from the USA. He hears them speaking Spanish. It turns out, one of the children of the new neighbors, Miguel, is Bobby’s age. Although Miguel was born in the USA, his parents were born in Merida, Mexico. During the summer, the two boys develop a strong friendship. Although both have much to learn about each other, Bobby, in particular, has much to learn about the Mexican culture that Miguel comes from. It is when school starts in the fall that Bobby learns not everyone is as eager as he is to learn about different cultures. For the first time in his life, Bobby confronts xenophobia. His struggles facing this xenophobia create a strain on his friendship with Miguel.
Bobby and Miguel is a novel for young readers. It helps young readers understand what multiculturalism means and how learning about other cultures can enrich one’s life. It is also a story about growing up and many of the difficult situations children face. Young readers should be able to relate to many of the situations Bobby faces, empathize with him as he tries to resolve new and challenging issues.
Victor continues to write stories for young readers. He is currently working on a follow-up to Bobby and Miguel as they continue their adventures in the Yucatan Peninsula. Hopefully, this next novel will be out by the fall of 2020!
