Sam Wiseman

Dr. Sam Wiseman is a multi-fellowship trained Canadian surgeon-scientist who has a love of surgical education and teaching, in particular education focused on surgical anatomy. Dr. Wiseman’s surgical practice is based out of St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, and is focused on the treatment of thyroid (especially thyroid cancer) and parathyroid (hyperparathyroidism) disease.Dr. Wiseman graduated from medical school, and also completed residency training in General Surgery, at at the University of Manitoba, obtaining his Fellowship in Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2000. At Roswell Park Cancer Institute he completed an American Head and Neck Society Advanced Training Council approved Head & Neck Surgery Fellowship, a Society of Surgical Oncology approved Surgical Oncology Fellowship, and an Oncology Research Fellowship. Dr. Wiseman then joined the staff at St. Paul's Hospital, and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2003. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Surgery at UBC. Dr. Wiseman is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and a Consultant Surgical Oncologist at the British Columbia Cancer Agency (BCCA).He currently serves as the Research Head for the Department of Surgery at Providence Health Care, and is the Chair of the Endocrine Tumour Group of the BCCA. Dr. Wiseman has contributed to the medical literature with greater than 150 research publications, and is a lead editor of the exciting new textbook Gray’s Surgical Anatomy. His academic work has been presented at many meetings worldwide and has also been recognized with many awards including: Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar Award, ACS Travelling Fellowship to Japan, and the UBC Richard J. Finley Senior Scholar Award.
