I started writing at age 20, during the summer of 2010 at a summer camp in rural Alabama. While I was never a good student in high-school, I excelled at writing. After I made a perfect score on both the SAT/ACT essay section, I decided that I possibly had the talent to write a book.
I knew I would never survive writing to a broad audience, so I decided to write a book targeted towards Christians in the South. Picking the two most influential classic pieces of literature set in The South, "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Uncle Tom's Cabin," and the two most influential personages in the South, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert E. Lee, I decided that I would interweave the four subjects with stories from my own life and Biblical scripture that was based on the Golden Rule.
It took me seven long years to complete, but when I finally did, I decided I would send the books on to media in the South. For the most part, it got positive reception, and was reviewed by newspapers in Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississsippi, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, and Arkansas. The book was also named one of the twelve self-help books to read by the "Atlanta-Journal Constitution." It also received national media coverage in Oklahoma City's "Daily Oklahoman," "The Hartford Courant" and St. Paul's "Pioneer Press."
After I started to receive positive media attention from the first one, I decided to embark on a second one. This one would be a book about the little-known Criminal on the Cross, who was always a hero of mine. The title of the book is the called, "The Criminal: The Power of an Apology." Since I thought he showed the epitome of character to Jesus for giving an unprovoked apology to Jesus for sinning, I began to examine what character traits led him to do this. The character traits that I came up with were vulnerability, courage, gratitude, discipline, integrity, and humility. In addition to including pieces of literature and history with the previous book, with this one, I decided to include popular music and movies to illustrate my points.
Since I had picked up the attention of a literary agent, he pushed me to write book number three. The interesting aspect of the third book, "He Spoke with Authority: Get, then Give the Advantage of Confidence", is that I wrote the majority of the book while working at a Walmart at a store and completed the vast majority of it in just forty-five days. By now, I had understood what was required in writing a book which possessed the style and message my books were starting to have. Although the book had a soft release in the summer of 2020, I decided to write another chapter on accessibility and include an afterword as well. The second edition was to be released in January of 2020. It has already received national media coverage in the "San Antonio Express News," St. Paul's "Pioneer Press," and Oklahoma City's "Daily Oklahoman."
My book are based on Biblical themes, but they are not written in the tone of which most Christian books are based; they are meant to be accessible by all, and they are meant to be an academic exercise, making you think. Ultimately, my goal is to deepen the faith of a person who is already a Christian, and introduce Christianity in a different light to non-Christians than they are used to seeing.
