He won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 2013, and was twice before a finalist for the prize, in 2012 for criticism and in 2000 for editorial writing. He is the author of Counterpoint: A Memoir of Bach and Mourning, published by Norton. He has written frequently about classical music for Gramophone, Opera News and The New Republic. He lives in Washington, D.C.
