Subhamoy Bhattacharya

Prof Bhattacharya was born in Kharagpur (West Bengal, India) to Bengali parents, grew up in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT, Kharagpur) campus town. He started his University life studying at IIT Kharagpur enrolled in the subject Geology and Exploration Geophysics. After successfully completing one year at IIT Kharagpur, he went to Calcutta (now Kolkata) to study Civil Engineering at one of the oldest Engineering College (Bengal Engineering College (B.E. College, Shibpore)- established in 1856, then renamed Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) and now Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, IIEST). Following his engineering education he worked as a Structural Designer (1998 to 2000) carrying out design of many important structures in India which covers both building & bridges.

In the year 2000, he was awarded Cambridge Nehru Scholarship to carry out Post-Graduate Studies and went to Cambridge in October 2000. He was awarded PhD in Engineering in December 2003. Following his PhD he returned to industry (2003 to 2005) where he was introduced to the fascinating offshore engineering.

In the year 2005, he returned to academia and started at University of Oxford (Departmental Lecturer and Junior Research Fellow of Somerville College, Oxford) and then at University of Bristol (Senior Lecturer in Dynamics) and currently at the University of Surrey where he is Chair Professor in Geomechanics.

Professor Bhattacharya is a Chartered Civil Engineering (CEng) and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE). He directs SAGE (Surrey Advanced Geotechnical Engineering) laboratory, a specialized Soil Mechanics/Geotechnical Engineering laboratory for research and industrial testing. He is also the Programme Director for the specialized MSc course on Advanced Geotechnical Engineering.

Professor Bhattacharya is also Adjunct professor at Zhejiang University (China), Guest Professor at Qingdao Technological University (China), Visiting Fellow at the University of Bristol (UK). He was also 21st Century Centre of Excellence Fellow at Tokyo Institute of Technology.
