Zuzana Palovic

Dr. Zuzana Palovic is a celebrated author, academic, and expert on Central and Eastern Europe, migration, and societal transformation. A five-time published author and founder of the non-governmental organization Global Slovakia, she is dedicated to fostering understanding, connection, and growth across cultural and geopolitical boundaries.

Born during the final years of the Iron Curtain, Zuzana’s family fled communist Czechoslovakia as political refugees, ultimately rebuilding their lives in Canada. This unique upbringing—bridging the ideologies of communism and freedom—infused her with a rare perspective on both worlds. Her global experience has only deepened her insights, as she has lived in ten countries across four continents, learning firsthand the intricacies of diverse societies.

Dr. Palovic’s academic journey includes studies at leading institutions in the United States, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. She earned her PhD at the University of Surrey, focusing on Eastern European migration. Her research goes beyond traditional analyses, delving into the cultural, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of societal transformation. Her bold argument that a "mental revolution" is the ultimate key to lasting societal change echoes the vision of President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the founding father of Czechoslovakia. Dr. Palovic advocates that true democracy begins with the liberation of individual consciousness—without which newly free societies risk becoming "democracies without democrats."

As a sought-after speaker, Dr. Palovic has shared her expertise at prestigious venues worldwide, including Oxford University, the Slovak Embassy in London, New York's Bohemian National Hall, Chicago’s Benedictine University, the Slovak Institute in Moscow, and the Slovak Institute in Prague. In 2018, she joined the Slovak President’s government delegation to New York and Chicago, where she presented her book The Great Return to distinguished audiences, including President Andrej Kiska and members of the diplomatic corps.

Through her NGO, Global Slovakia, Dr. Palovic collaborates with governments, institutions, and businesses to promote Slovakia’s heritage and foster dialogue about the region's challenges and opportunities. Her mission is clear: to inspire individuals to embrace transformation, explore their roots, and reimagine their futures.

Dr. Palovic’s work resonates globally, not only through her books but also through her leadership in cultural and educational initiatives. A passionate advocate for the Slovak diaspora, she championed the pivotal change in Slovak citizenship law that came into effect in April 2022, opening the door for millions of Slovak descendants to reclaim their citizenship and gain EU passports. By reconnecting individuals with their roots and amplifying the untold stories of Central Europe, Dr. Palovic continues to make an indelible mark on the world stage.
