Martha Stoddard, a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators as well as the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, is an experienced writer, certified educator, and instructional specialist. Her work has appeared in Writing Teacher magazine; the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors (TEPSA) Journal; community nonprofit publications; newspapers; and reading, science, and history products for educational publishers.
Years of exploring science and history topics with and modeling thinking skills for her students are reflected in her nonfiction writing for children. When she’s not creating pieces to stimulate her readers’ curiosity, she travels with husband David. Once they were turtle watching beside a pond. David mentioned to a passerby that his wife recognized each turtle that she saw. The stranger was amazed and asked how this could be. David replied, “She has turtle recall!”
Her book, Nelly: The Turtle That Went to School and Found a Home, is her first children’s book. It is a unique narrative nonfiction chapter book for middle grade readers ages 8 through 12 who can empathize with a teacher who takes a rescue red-eared slider turtle home and her challenging experiences as a beginner reptile-keeper.
