James T McCafferty

James T. McCafferty has written hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles and columns on outdoor, travel, and historical subjects for a wide variety of publications, including Mississippi Magazine, Field & Stream, and Outdoor Life. He has received numerous awards from both the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association and the Outdoor Writers Association of America.

Under the name Jim McCafferty he authored two children’s books, Holt and the Teddy Bear (the story of Holt Collier, Theodore Roosevelt, and the Mississippi Delta hunt that resulted in the naming of the Teddy Bear) and Holt and the Cowboys. Both are true stories of Delta bear hunter Holt Collier, both received the Children’s Crown Collection designation, and both are published by Pelican Publishing Company of Gretna, Louisiana.

McCafferty, whose special interest is the hunting and outdoor history of the lower Mississippi River South and the Southwest, is also the author of The Bear Hunter: The Life and Times of Robert Eager Bobo in the Canebrakes of the Old South (Canebrake Publishing Company, 2015); the compiler and editor of Hunting Bear and Panther In the Old South: The Writings of Dr. Henry J. Peck of Sicily Island, Louisiana; and the author of the monograph Death in the Canebrakes: Hunting Bear with the Knife in the Old South.

McCafferty holds a B. A. from Millsaps College, a Master’s degree in Theological Studies from Spring Hill College, and a law degree from the University of Mississippi. He practices law in McComb, Mississippi, working primarily in the environmental and education fields. McCafferty and his wife, the former Malinda Hamilton of Greenville, Mississippi, have five children and are communicants of St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church in New Orleans, Louisiana.
