Jon McVey

For many years Jon McVey's life was mainly going to plan. His plans went out of the window when, at 45, he inexplicably started falling over. He was diagnosed with a rare, slowly progressing muscle wasting disease, akin to muscular dystrophy, called Inclusion Body Myositis.

Fortunately Jon had the support of his lovely wife and two children.

As a young man Jon enjoyed disappearing down caves and potholes. His interest in difficult to get to places continues, but he discovered when you lose your mobility, you can find the inaccessible closer to home, in inadequate building design, and shoddy planning decisions.

Up Cripple Creek, Jon's first book, writes about the funny situations he found himself in, the numerous falls, the places that became inaccessible, the unfamiliar equipment that filled the house, the adventures of maintaining independence and the painful hospital visits.

He combines this with his interests in the biology of his condition and in the history of disability.
