Iker Puente PhD

Iker Puente, PhD, is a psychologist and psychotherapist with over twenty years of experience researching the field of expanded states of consciousness, and transpersonal psychology, with a special interest in holotropic breathwork and psychedelic psychotherapy and research. Bachelor of Psychology (University of Deusto, 2000) and Social and Cultural Anthropology (Autonomous Uni-versity of Barcelona – UAB, 2003). He has been professor and researcher at the Educational and Developmental Psychology Department at the UAB, where he obtained his PhD with the disserta-tion Complexity and Transpersonal Psychology: Chaos, Self-organization and Peak Experiences in Psychotherapy. He completed Research Scholar internships at the California Institute of Inte-gral Studies, and has visited several universities and research centers, including UC Berkeley, Harvard Medical School and New York University. He has conducted research for his thesis in Barcelona, New York, San Francisco, Joshua Tree and Moscow, and has developed additional research pro-jects in Colombia, Brazil, the desert of Nevada, Portugal, Amsterdam and London, among other places, studying different techniques and contexts through every culture and subculture accessed expanded states of consciousness.

Dr. Puente is a transpersonal and humanist counseling psychotherapist, trained in Transper-sonal Psychotherapy and Holotropic Breathwork with Stanislav Grof, in Gestalt Therapy at the Institut Gestalt in Barcelona (2007), in Ethnopsychology and the use of Expanded States of Cons-ciousness in Psychotherapy at the Ethnopsychology Society (SdEA, 2005), in Integrative Body-work Therapy, in Enneagram at Claudio Naranjo’s SAT program and in MAPS MDMA-assisted psychotherapy training. He has been member of the faculty at different psychotherapy centers and institutes, teaching transpersonal psychology and psychotherapy. He has collaborated with the psychedelic support service at the BOOM Art Festival since 2008, and has been the founder and coordinator of the first service of this kind in Spain at the Own Spirit Festival since 2015.

He has published a dozen of articles in various journals and magazines (Enrahonar, Journal of Transpersonal Research, The Inner Door, Ulises, Cañamo) and collaborated on some collective books: Consciousness Revolution: Transpersonal Discoveries That Are Changing the World (2010) Transpersonal: Planet, Culture and Consciousness (Ed Mandala, 2011), Integral Politics (Ed Pamiela, 2013) and Breaking Convention: Psychedelic Pharmacology for the 21st Century (Stran-ge Attractor Press, 2017). He has been Editorial Assistant of the Journal of Transpersonal Re-search, and coordinated the publication of a special issue on Holotropic Breathwork and Other Hyperventilation Techniques in 2014 and on Psychedelic Research in 2016. In 2017 he published his first book, Investigación y Psicoterapia Psicodélica: Pasado, Presente y Futuro (Ed La Liebre de Marzo, 2017).

He is the founder and director of the Institute Transpersonal Integrativo (Transpersonal Inte-grative Institute), an institute based in Barcelona offering transpersonal oriented psychotherapy, integration sessions, transpersonal breathing workshops, transpersonal psychology and psyche-delic psychotherapy courses and seminars, and has developed and runs a three year training course in Transpersonal Integrative Psychology and Psychotherapy. He is currently collaborating in the first study of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of depression being carried out in Spain.
