Jack Welsh graduated from Saint Vincent College in 1974 with a degree in English and he was a member of the Intercollegiate Club Football team. After graduation, he spent one year working as a third helper on Open Hearth 5 at United States Steel Homestead Works. He then enlisted in the Army as a Private First Class serving in Germany and he spent 28 years and nine months in the military, culminating with command of an airborne (paratrooper) battalion at Fort Bragg and assignment as a Colonel on the Joint Staff at the Pentagon. After retirement, he stayed on at the Pentagon, first as a contractor and subsequently as a government civilian employee. He continued to work after he was diagnosed with end state renal failure, thanks to great support from his family, friends, and coworkers. On July 26th, 2011 he underwent a kidney transplant. His sister Nancy was the donor and the operation was performed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He currently resides in Fayetteville, North Carolina with his wife Silvia, who he met in 1975 while serving in Germany and married in 1978. They have two children, Miriam and Sean, who live in Richmond, Virginia and one grandchild, Jacob.
