Hi readers!
Here's a bit about me:
I have 12 years’ experience teaching in public schools (including charter schools) from kindergarten through twelfth grade. I was an 8/9th grade ELA teacher for 9 years at Gompers Preparatory Academy, located in urban southeast San Diego. I have taught in some of the most challenging school settings from coast to coast, including a boarding school for students from fifteen different Indian tribes in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. Most of my full-time teaching experience is at the middle school level, although I have experience teaching high school and elementary school settings. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Education at The Pennsylvania State University and master’s degree in educational technology from San Diego State University. I have been a teacher, teacher coach, curriculum designer, speaker, and has held leadership positions in K-12 school settings and university settings. I was humbled to be recognized as Teacher of the Year at Gompers Preparatory Academy in the 2008-2009 school year.
In June 2018, I was a keynote speaker at The Beginning Institute in Tucson, Arizona. I was also a keynote speaker at the Beginning Teacher Conference in Champaign, Illinois in 2020 and the virtual keynote speaker of Illinois New Teacher Collaborative Beginning Teacher Conference in 2020.
In addition to my educational work in the United States, I have expanded my educational knowledge around the globe in Kathmandu, Nepal, Hungary, Botswana, and also taught in rural parts of Turkey.
I was selected as a US Ambassador with Fulbright Distinguished Teachers Award, which gave me an opportunity to coach 11th and 12th grade teachers in a rural village in Botswana on engagement strategies, smart technology use, and best practices in the classroom.
My first bestselling book Real Talk About Classroom Management: 50 Best Practices That Work and Show You Believe in Your Students was published by Corwin Press in February 2018. My second book Real Talk About Time Management: 35 Best Practices for Educators was published by Corwin in 2020 in collaboration with my coauthor, Dr. Edward DeRoche. Thanks for stopping by!
