I have a step daughter called Sara (as well as two bio kids) who has lived with my husband and I for the past 5 years and been an important part of my life since she was 3. I looked for books that reflected our relationship but I couldn't find any and there are very few books with step parents playing a positive role in them. For example. while there are a few great books out there, such as My Fairy Stepmother and My Super Stepmom, I have struggled to find any books for young children which have a step mother featuring as a positive character without having a superpower. The only other category of books I found that featured step mums were those which are written to help a child get over the hard situation they are in, and say step mums aren’t so bad.

I wanted to write a book that gives the positive message that even though the step parent has no magical powers, isn’t a fairy, and may look nothing like the child, that none of this matters. Instead all that matters to the child is that their step parent helps them feel happy and loves them lots. I also found that while there are hundreds of “I love my daddy”, and “I love my mummy” books, I found no equivalent for step mums or step dads. Therefore I thought this would be a good place to start, hence these books.

I want these books to illustrate how much care and love there can be between the step child and step parent and to highlight some of the many things that step parents do for, and with, their step children.
