Ellen Lamont is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Appalachian State University. Her research examines gender in families and intimate relationships, with a focus on how broad societal changes make or limit space for changing gender norms in these contexts. The Mating Game: How Gender Still Shapes How We Date uses in-depth interviews with heterosexual and LGBTQ individuals to explore how people date and form romantic relationships in a cultural terrain marked by competing messages about gender, sexuality, and intimacy. Her work has been covered by a number of media outlets including The Atlantic, New York Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Ms., Women's Health, and BBC World News. She received a B.A. in Peace and Conflict Studies from UC Berkeley in 2001, an M.A. in International Relations from The University of Chicago in 2003, and a PhD in Sociology from New York University in 2014.
