Ky’a Jackson was raised in Camden, New Jersey, along with her brother Michael by her mother Antoinette Jackson. At just 14 years old, she began her journey as a caregiver due to her mother being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Taking on this responsibility came with huge obstacles, however, she knew in her heart that she would get through whatever would be set in her path. She knew she would find the strength in her faith and the closeness of her family.
Sadly in 2006, Ky’a’s mother passed away after a brave battle with MS. Following
her mother’s passing, Ky'a immediately began writing as an expression of her grieve.
By combining personal stories, advice and much needed educational resources, Ky'a created
her book, The Color of Care: A Beginner’s Guide for the African American Caregiver. Its purpose
is to support, guide and encourage African American caregivers through their journeys as
caregivers.
Within her book, she encourages these caregivers to practice self-care, learn their
limits, recognize the challenges that may arise, and most importantly, know wholeheartedly
that they are never alone in this journey. Above it all, and regardless of age or situation, it is her
goal to ensure that those facing heart-wrenching circumstances know, without a doubt, that
with strength, faith, and camaraderie, they can move mountains, creating the peace and
comfort they and their loved ones deserve.
