Karla Huebner

Having grown up in the Midwest and California, I also had the benefit of family travels that included visits to friends in then-Communist Czechoslovakia. After receiving my BA in Theatre Arts from the University of California at Santa Cruz, I began to publish short fiction in literary and genre magazines while living on a boat and working in factories, offices, oil refineries, theaters, publishing, private investigation, and adolescent drug rehab. Eventually I began working on novels and earned a PhD in Art History.

Magnetic Woman: Toyen and the Surrealist Erotic investigates the life and work of one of surrealism's most enigmatic artists. Toyen’s early life in Prague enabled her to become a force in three avant-garde groups—Devětsil, Prague surrealism, and Paris surrealism—yet only recently has her work begun to be widely appreciated.

I currently teach at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and have some exciting new book projects underway.
