Janene Cullen is an engineer and a passionate advocate for the natural world that makes human life possible. With a career spanning aerospace engineering, government contracting, and commercial space integration, she has spent decades solving complex problems — but her deepest mission is far more elemental: helping people rediscover their connection to plants and the living systems that sustain us. Janene is a military Veteran having served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force as a satellite engineer.  Has a BS in Electrical Engineering, an MBA, and a PhD in International Business. She currently works for the Aerospace Corporation as a technical advisor for designing, building, launching, and operating Department of Defense satellites.  She became a Virginia Master Gardener in 2006, an Audubon Ambassador in 2012, a Virginia Tree Steward in 2015, and a Climate Reality Leader in 2020.

Drawing on her background in engineering, sustainability, and scientific communication, Janene translates complex environmental concepts into clear, engaging stories that inspire action. Her work highlights a simple truth we often overlook: plants quietly provide the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we depend on, and the climate stability we take for granted. Protecting them means protecting ourselves.

Her books blend science and heartfelt advocacy to show how plants support human health, mental well‑being, and the resilience of our planet. She writes for readers who want to understand the natural world more deeply — and who believe that small acts of care can create meaningful environmental change. When she’s not writing, Janene can be found exploring gardens, studying plant science, and championing efforts to restore ecosystems and reduce pollution. She believes that reconnecting with nature isn’t just good for the planet — it’s essential for our future.
