Chandra Young

Chandra Young was born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. She came to New York City after her family migrated from Jamaica in the 1970s, as result of the tumultuous political climate and the threat of communism in Jamaica at the time. She attended high school, college and law school in New York City and later embarked upon studies toward a doctorate degree in Boston, Massachusetts.

As a student, Ms. Young was a champion of the rights of her fellow students and later as a professional, became a diligent advocate for affordable housing for New Yorkers. For her long-standing commitment to real estate in New York City, she was awarded a Proclamation by the City Council for her service in home ownership, to the people of the City of New York . Later, she was awarded a Marcus Garvey Award of Recognition for her commitment and service to the improvement of the lives of immigrants, specifically, Jamaicans and Caribbean immigrants, in the City of New York.

Though only recently publishing her first book, Ms. Young has always been a lover of writing and has written commentaries, speeches, essays, blog posts, and poetry, some of which, have appeared on internet sites and in local New York print media. Her blog, "locallivesglobalvobces.com" represents an amalgamation of thoughts expressed and lived through the direct and vicarious experiences that being a global citizen can provide. It is her way of building a bridge that connects our local lives experienced in out respective localities with the global voices that unites us in similar experiences, concerns, pains, passions that informs our shared consciousness as human beings in spite of geography. It is dedicated to writings that express the commonalities that unites us all.

In addition to her professional and other pursuits, Ms. Young is also a mother of two adult sons and is an academic and personal mentor to disadvantaged students, and is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who formerly served in Jamaica, her birth country.
