Mark Peel has written 15 books including England Expects: A Biography of Ken Barrington (winner of the 1993 Cricket Society Literary Award); Cricketing Falstaff: The Life of Colin Milburn; The Last Roman: The Life of Colin Cowdrey; Ambassdors of Goodwill (shortlisted for the 2018 MCC/ Cricket Society Book of the Year), Playing the Game? Cricket's Tarnished Ideals from Bodyline to the Present (shortlisted for the Daily Telegraph 2018 book of the Year Award) Cricketing Caesar: A Biography of Mike Brearley; The Hollow Crown: England Cricket Captains from 1945 to the Present; Never Surrender: The Life of Douglas Jardine (shortlisted for the Sunday Times 2021 Cricket Book of the Year); Gilly: The Turbulent Life of Roy Gilchrist and Yorkshire Grit: The Life of Ray Illingworth- due out in July 2023. He has also written biographies of the Eton headmaster Anthony Chenevix-Trench, the Methodist cleric and political activist Donald Soper, the 14th Duke of Hamilton and the former Labour/ Liberal Democrat politician Shirley Williams. He is currently writing a biography of Scotland's first First Minister Donald Dewar.
