Caroline Voaden

Caroline Voaden is a writer, author and politician. Raised in Edinburgh, she studied French & Economics at Sheffield University and went on to work at Reuters news agency, where she worked as a correspondent and sub-editor in London and several European countries. After working in Belgrade during the Bosnian war, she became Bureau Chief in Zagreb, Croatia. She is proud to be able to say she used to speak very good Croatian!

She married journalist Nick Doughty and they returned to London where they had two daughters. Soon after the birth of Laura, Nick was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and died a year later.

Caroline moved to Devon in 2007 where she still lives, and where she has spent many years working as a freelance writer and editor.

In 2016 Caroline became actively involved in politics due to her anger at the result of the EU referendum. She stood for parliament in 2017 and in 2019 was elected as a Liberal Democrat MEP for SW England & Gibraltar. She led the Lib Dems in the European Parliament, serving until January 31st, 2020 when all UK MEPs left because of Brexit.

Caroline remains involved with the Liberal Democrats and lives in Totnes with her second husband Stuart, her daughters sometimes, and a daft miniature schnauzer.
