Jamil Mustafa

Dr. Jamil Mustafa is Professor of English Studies at Lewis University, where he has also served as Director of Literature and Language, Department Chair, and Scholars Academy Director. He is the co-editor of Gothic Studies. He hosted the 2019 International Gothic Association Conference: Gothic Terror, Gothic Horror. He teaches courses in Victorian literature, film studies, and Gothic literature. He received his BA in English and Communications from Lewis & Clark College, and his MA and PhD in English from the University of Chicago.

Dr. Mustafa is the author of The Blaxploitation Horror Film: Adaptation, Appropriation and the Gothic (University of Wales Press, 2023), which was shortlisted for the 2025 Allan Lloyd Smith Prize and longlisted for the 2024 Museum of African American History Stone Book Award. He has contributed to Disability, Illness, and the Vampire in Literature and Culture (Routledge, 2025), The Queer Gothic (Edinburgh University Press, 2023), Neo-Gothic Narratives (Anthem, 2020), Gothic Britain (University of Wales Press, 2018), Wilde’s Other Worlds (Routledge, 2018), The Gothic Tradition in Supernatural (McFarland, 2016), and Dimensions of Curiosity (University Press of America, 2004). His short story, "Vicious Circle," was published in The Horror Zine Magazine (Spring 2015), where he was the featured author.

Dr. Mustafa co-edited a special issue of Humanities entitled Gothic Adaptation: Intermedial and Intercultural Shape-Shifting (2023). He has published articles in Humanities, American Imago, The New Ray Bradbury Review, Neo-Victorian Studies, Cabinet de Fées: A Fairy Tale Journal, and Studies in the Humanities. He is also the author of The Bethlehem Blog, which describes his semester teaching at Bethlehem University.
