Craig Baldwin

Craig Baldwin is a physician with a four-and-a-half-decade career in medicine, beginning his training at the birth of neonatology, and graduating from medical school four months after Wade vs. Roe. With Board Certification in pediatrics, emergency medicine, and anesthesiology along with subspecialty training in pediatric anesthesia, flight medicine, and bariatric medicine training, he has had broad experience in medical practices, including VA hospitals, the Indian Health Service, military medicine, city hospitals, a variety of University Teaching Hospitals, private practice, community hospitals, NHS hospitals in England, and others. A veteran of two services, the US Army as an enlisted draftee, and the Air Force Reserves as an officer, he served in two wars—Vietnam and Gulf War I, retiring from the air force after twenty years as a Chief Flight Surgeon with service in several Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve units, as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee, in a variety of aircraft and a number of military hospitals, clinics, aeroevac staging facilities and deployments as a flight surgeon and as an anesthesiologist. He has volunteered overseas with philanthropic medical organizations performing mostly pediatric plastic surgery. He graduated from a major Eastern State University, majoring in English and Literature and minoring in Art History with a strong interest in Ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, Early Christian, Byzantine and Medieval Art. He participated in an Honors English program including semesters with major writers Ralph Ellison, Paul Fussell, Muriel Sparks, Susan Sontag among others. He attended the NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts in New York City briefly to pursue an academic/museum career but was drafted into the Army after a few months. He worked for the New York City Department of Welfare in the South Bronx and after Army service for the renamed New York City Department of Social Services in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. He was an electronics technician in the Army and a programmer/systems engineer at a main frame computer company for a period of time before medical school. An avid motorcyclist, he has raced motorcycles, been a runner completing a few marathons, and was an avid outdoorsman including skiing, camping and hiking. He has published articles on Parachute injuries in a military air rescue unit, and morbidity and mortality of motorcycle road racing, as well as patient reports in the anesthesia literature and at anesthesia meetings. He is the father of seven and grandfather of eleven (so far) and lives in the mountain West with his lovely wife and family. Author wrote this novel between 1973 and 1977, as a medical student and Pediatrics Resident largely in response to the Wade v. Roe Supreme Court decision, to celebrate infants, children and life at all its stages.
