James Gault

James (Jim) spent many years at sea - navigating real oceans, commanding real ships and serving in roles spanning operations, training, diplomacy and emergency rescue. It is a life of hard-won experience that gives his historical fiction its rare sense of authenticity: the weight of command, the cost of loyalty, the complexity of honour under pressure.

Now retired and writing from a small coastal town in Australia, James has published fifteen works across historical fiction and contemporary crime. His historical novels are grounded in meticulous research and drawn from a lifelong love of the medieval world - its politics, its battles, and the deeply human stories that history records but rarely tells in full.

Blood, Steel and Reputation is his fifth work of historical fiction - and possibly his most ambitious. It currently holds a 5.0-star rating across 145 Goodreads ratings, and is ranked #2 on the Goodreads All Sorts Favourites list - above Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and To Kill a Mockingbird - by popular reader vote.

James lives with his wife Sally and their food-obsessed Labrador, Pippa.
