Dr. Tierney Thys is an author, National Geographic Explorer, biologist, filmmaker, Research Associate at California Academy of Science, Founder of Adopt a Sunfish Project and CoFounder of the 501c3 Around the World in 80 Fabrics. Her research includes satellite tracking marine megafauna, mapping connections between nature and human wellbeing through brain imaging, quantifying nature’s effect on incarcerated populations and serving as Daily Explorer in the popular online game, Animal Jam. In 2021 she cofounded the educational non-profit Around the World in 80 Fabrics to share, celebrate and elevate the voices of communities creating regenerative textiles as healthy alternatives our petroleum-soaked fast fashion pollution. As past Director of Research for Sea Studios Foundation, she helped produce PBS documentaries Strange Days on Planet Earth and Shape of Life. Thys is a TED All-star speaker, TEDed writer e.g. The Secret Life of Plankton (Wildscreen Panda Winner) and serves on the science advisory board for the innovation think tank, ThinkBeyondPlastic as well as the The Plastic Pollution Coalition and editorial board for the Journal of Animal Sentience. She has written for Natural History magazine, Ocean Realm and National Geographic.
