During 'The Troubles' (70's, 80's and 90's) in Northern Ireland I spent a lot of time there as my girlfriend had been born there and grew up in Belfast. The differences between England and Northern Ireland were palpable. The people, the attitudes, the culture, the music, the atmosphere...and the immediate dangers. The vast majority of English people viewed events there through the lens of the British media or from a military perspective. I witnessed it through my own eyes, ears and other senses first hand and those distinctive memories have always stayed with me. Moving into semi-retirement recently gave me the perfect opportunity to write my first novel and throughout the story to convey some of that perspective and emotion.
