Joan Carter

Joan Carter, born in 1907, grew up in Amherst Massachusetts, as an only child. After graduating from high school, she attended a library training school, and then worked as a children's librarian for a few years. She married William Harrison Carter and moved to Storrs Connecticut when he got a job at the University. They became very active at UConn, the Storrs Congregation Church and the local community, where they lived the rest of their lives.

Joan had a passion for many things including reading, writing, nature, animals, genealogy and travel. Her yard was full of lovely gardens and birds she enjoyed watching. She loved to spend time with her beloved family and friends. She had a twinkle in her eyes, a warm smile and a true love of life.

Her favorite childhood teacher would write a poem on the chalkboard on Monday, and they would have to memorize it by Friday. She could quote many of these poems her whole life. This teacher inspired her to read and write. Over the years she wrote several poems and short stories for her daughter and grandchildren to enjoy.

Joan wrote A Christmas Fable late in life and read it to her family on Christmas Eve. It has been 20 years since she passed away and her daughter, Alice Duston, and granddaughter, Deborah Ryan, wanted to keep her memory alive by publishing this book for future generations to enjoy.

We were blessed to connect with a local artist, Susan Monty, who truly brought the story to life. Her love of painting animals made her a perfect fit for this book. Please follow her at www.susanmonty.com.
