David E. Dussourd

For as long as he can remember, David Dussourd has enjoyed going outdoors to explore the wondrous creatures soaring through the air, swimming in a drop of pond water, or hidden under a leaf. He shares his love of nature by teaching biology at the University of Central Arkansas, by publishing scientific articles and children’s books, and by developing outreach activities for community groups, including for pre-school and elementary school children. His passion for nature developed during family camping trips, classes at a local Audubon Center, and outdoor activities with the Boy Scouts, which led ultimately to a PhD in animal behavior from Cornell University and a lifetime of research on insects and plants. His interest in children’s books stems directly from the wonders and joys of being a parent. Photographs of his son as a child enrich his books, together with pictures of diverse life ranging from slime molds to salamanders. Children's books often focus on fantasy creatures, but what nature offers is just as amazing. The beauty and magnificence of wildlife and natural landscapes provide inspiration, hope, and meaning, a playground for fun and adventure, and a haven in our troubled world.
