Matthew J. Adams

Matthew is an archaeologist and historian and currently the Director of the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem. He received his PhD in History from the Pennsylvania State University in 2007, specializing in Egyptology and Near Eastern Archaeology, and has carried out excavations for more than 25 years in Egypt and Israel. While he has broad interests in space and time throughout the ancient world, his primary research focus is on the development of urban communities in 3rd Millennium Egypt and Levant and the Roman Army in the Near East. He is currently directing or co-directing several major research projects, including the Jezreel Valley Regional Project, the Tel Aviv University Megiddo Expedition (with Israel Finkelstein and Mario A.S. Martin), and the JVRP Castra Legionis VI Ferrata Excavations at Legio, Israel (with Yotam Tepper). He is also a member of the Penn State excavations at Mendes, Egypt.
