Patrick Davies is a writer, long-distance walker and charity fundraiser. He was a British diplomat for 25 years wrapping up his career in Washington DC as the UK's Deputy Ambassador to the United States (2013-18) where he worked alongside the Trump and Obama White Houses for 5 years. Earlier in his career, he served in Morocco, Poland and Iran. While at the Foreign Office in London, he was Private Secretary to two Foreign Secretaries, Robin Cook and Jack Straw (2000-3) and, later, led the UK's response to the Arab Spring. His first taste of the US was on a student exchange programme in 1987. He has more than 30 years' experience of America, its people and politics and has travelled to more than 40 US states.
The Covid-19 pandemic saw Patrick returning to the north of England to help care for his dad who has Alzheimer's Disease. Faced with such a significant life change, he set out to walk across the UK in 2021 to have time and space to reflect, raising 30,000 pounds for Alzheimer's Research UK along the way.
Since then, Patrick has continued his nomadic lifestyle, walking almost 800 miles across the Pyrenees from Biarritz to Barcelona in 2022 and 720 miles along France's eastern border, crossing the Vosges, Jura and the Alps, in 2023. From these two treks, he has raised a further 15,000 pounds for Alzheimer's research.
