Carol Nash

Many people say that Carol Nash has led an adventurous life and can turn her hand to many things.

Although born in London, Carol spent most of her childhood on a small farm in the south east of England, fighting with her brother in a straw bale wrestling ring (made by her father out of desperation,) and being chased by a goose. After marrying and having 4 children in quick succession; thoroughly sick of bad schools, the business, mortgages and the temperamental British weather, Carol and her family made a rash decision to take a year out, selling their house to buy a small boat. That was in 1987; they never returned.

They lived as water gypsies for 13 years, doing whatever work came their way.

As the kids grew, they had to upgrade to a larger boat, and that boat became their home, transport and business while they ran whale and dolphin watching trips in Southern Europe.

Carol says, “ I will always remember one lady being absolutely astonished when she realised that we lived onboard as she was convinced that boats were only for holidays! So many of our passengers became friends, returning for their dolphin fix, and to play with Shithead our live-aboard cat, every year.”

It was difficult adjusting to shore life again, this time in Spain, and even harder when she decided to move to Istanbul to teach kindergarten English. Eleven years later, Carol has retired to Spain and now lives off-grid near some of her family.

“I’m still re-adjusting to the slower pace of life, learning Spanish, forgetting Turkish and struggling to grow vegetables from kitchen scraps as an experiment!”

“I love to travel and have far too many places on my bucket list, so I guess writing about my travels is the next best thing!

‘Highways and Thai Ways’ is my new baby.’”
