Robert Walls is a Research Associate in the Institute for Indigenous Knowledge at Indiana University, Bloomington. Born and raised in the New York City area, he received his B.A. degree from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University. For over thirty years he taught courses on Indigenous and environmental studies at Lafayette College, the University of South Carolina-Columbia, and the University of Notre Dame. He is the author and editor of three books and numerous academic articles, as well as essays and editorials for newspapers and magazines. His current research and consulting focus on Indigenous ethnohistory and early Native writing as cultural heritage. His current book project is a study of Indigenous literacies in northwestern North America, and their relationship to treaties, culture, and the continued resilience of Native communities.
