About the Author

Hayden Smith is a research physicist by education and experience. After a satisfying and productive research career of 14 plus years, he came home to Muskegon to be near his children. With an interim time in educational sales, he finally turned to a new career as a physics and mathematics instructor at the local community college. This was one of the most fulfilling times of his life. After a total of 22 years, he retired. During his teaching time, he would often say, at lunch with colleagues, that he would like to write a novel, that he had an idea for a story.

After he retired and his second wife died, two things happened. One of his daughters, who knew about his wish to write, told him about The Bear River Writers’ Conference and sent him to it. At about the same time, a dear friend and former colleague remembered the lunch conversations and suggested he join the writing group that she led. He did both, attended the Bear River Writer’s conference and joined the writing group in his hometown. He is so grateful for both suggestions. His life was changed forever. He found a new passion that he didn’t know he had. In addition to all the other writing he did along the way while learning his writing craft, his novel began to shape up.

Now he has five passions that feed and gratify him. The first and foremost passion is to stay close to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They are his joy. What else? He is getting back to his roots in music and theatre, both performing and attending. Look for his third cabaret show in 2021. He is passionate about travel – especially to France, Ireland, and Italy, and around this great United States. He particularly loves the wine regions in California, Oregon, and Virginia. Hayden continues doing research in physics and physics-related subjects. And of course, writing fiction and the stories of his life. He often says, “It is a great, full life!”
