Carlos Goffi is one of the pioneer student athletes from Brazil to play college tennis in the USA where he graduated with degrees in Psychology and Business Administration.
His multi-faceted entrepreneurial career began as a professional tennis coach and author. His coaching career began in 1975 at the Port Washington Tennis Academy in NY, by recommendation from his mentor Harry Hopman. He became its Junior Program Director and worked closely with the Academy’s top junior players, which included John McEnroe. Carlos is also a former coach to John and his brother Patrick on the ATP Tour.
Goffi’s best seller Tournament Tough with commentaries by John McEnroe, was published worldwide in 1984 when John was the best player in the world. Tournament Tough was revolutionary by emphasizing the psychology of the game over technique. The book has been updated/republished as Paperback and Kindle EBook.
During his 40+ years of coaching, Carlos has been a keynote speaker at numerous tennis conventions and conferences. He was voted 1991 Coach of the Year by his peers. Goffi directed his Nike Tournament Tough Camps for 33 years at various universities in the US and at resorts worldwide. He has also managed the ESPN Wide World of Sports Tennis Complex at Disney World where he hosted major events including Prince Harry’s 2016 Invictus Games.
His son Josh is a former ATP/Davis Cup player, a two-time ITA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year (Arizona State University and Duke University) and, presently, the Men’s Head Tennis Coach for the University of South Carolina. Josh is the 2013 SEC Coach of the Year.
Father and son have developed the Tournament Tough Digital Courses, which will be available in 2023.
