Georg Lauhoff

Dr. Georg Lauhoff is an Engineer at IBM and carries out R&D in materials science and its application in data storage devices and uses the techniques described in this book for his work. He co-authored 40 refereed journal articles and over 30 conference presentations, primarily in the field of materials science, data storage materials, and magnetic thin films. Georg co-authored textbooks in the field of Data Science and Risk Management (in English and German).

He studied physics at Aachen (Diplom) and Cambridge University (Master and Ph.D.) specializing in the field of materials science and magnetic thin films and sensors. He also earned an MBA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, focusing on data science and supply chain management.

He was awarded scholarships and research grants in the U.K. and Japan. He was elected at Cambridge University by Prof. Stephen Hawking as the Clerk Maxwell Scholar from 1995– 98 and is a Fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society.

After completing his Ph.D. he moved to Japan and held a faculty position in Materials Science and Engineering at the Toyota Technological Institute. Returning to Cambridge University he carried out research in the sequencing of DNA using magnetic sensors at Cambridge University. Since 2005 Dr. Lauhoff has worked in the recording industry in the Bay area.
