William Ochsenwald

Dr. William Ochsenwald received his Ph. D. in Middle Eastern History from the University of Chicago. He is an Emeritus Professor of History at Virginia Tech. He has written several books, including Nationalism in a Non-National State: the Dissolution of the Ottoman Empire (co-edited with William Haddad); The Hijaz Railroad; Religion, Society, and the State in Arabia: the Hijaz under Ottoman Control, 1840-1908; and Religion, Economy and State in Ottoman Arab History. He is the author of the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh editions of The Middle East: A History. His most recent publications are "The Transformation of Education in the Hijaz, 1925-1945," in Arabian Humanities 12 (2019), and "Re-Reading T. E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom," in the International Journal of Middle East Studies (2020).
