Larry Krasner is the son of a crime novelist and an evangelical preacher. He navigated from the St. Louis and Philadelphia area public schools to Stanford Law School, where he graduated with a pile of student loans. Unlike many of his classmates who pursued careers in corporate law, Krasner became a public defender, criminal defense attorney and civil rights lawyer. Thirty years into his career, he made the unlikely choice to run for district attorney with the goal of fixing a criminal justice system he considered to be broken. Despite being a political outsider, Krasner's direct and outspoken platform for change was embraced by a grass roots movement that won that election in 2017 with more votes than any Philly district attorney candidate in at least twenty years.
In January, 2018 Krasner and the movement that supported him took power. He is currently the twenty-sixth elected district attorney in Philadelphia. He has frequently stated he views his fellow progressive prosecutors and himself as mere technicians for a grass roots movement for criminal justice reform that is sweeping the nation. He has called criminal justice reform in America the civil rights movement of our time.
Krasner has been featured in the New Yorker, New York Times Magazine, Newsweek among other print publications. He has frequently appeared on NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, podcasts and other media. He is also featured in the documentary mini-series about his office's efforts at changing criminal justice in "Philly D.A.", premiering at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on February 2, 2021. "Philly D.A." airs on PBS in eight episodes beginning April 20, 2021.
Krasner lives in Philadelphia with his wife of 31 years and law school classmate, Lisa Rau, a professional mediator and retired Philadelphia judge. They have two grown children, Nate and Caleb.
